  • Owl of Wisdom Jewelry

The Owl of wisdom is frequently associated to the Greek Goddess Athena and it is a symbol of her wisdom. this image of the Owl of Athena is one of the most 'classic' ancient Greek symbols as it was depicted on coins during the golden age of Pericles 461 BC to 379 BC. It was during this inspiring age of wisdom that philosophy, architecture, medicine, theater and the arts were first established as the fabric to society to set grounds to an array of social fundamentals as they are today, whilst the radical concept of 'democracy' was also first fostered. The Greek owl of Wisdom encapsulates this golden age.

The ancient Greeks demonstrated great wisdom in creating the building blocks of our modern society (inventing most of the sciences, arts and social systems) which continue to set the standard today. However they did this because they were able to understand the spiritual world as well as the physical. Their love of nature of the owl of Athena among other animals perhaps best embodies the simplicity which lit their path.

Greek Jewelry Shop's Wise owl collection is hand-made from solid silver (or gold if applicable) by some of the best Greek artisans. • Alexander the Great...

Alexander the Great (Alexander III of Macedon) was born 356 BC and died in 323 BC. By the age of 33 he had conquered most of the known ancient world. Tutored from childhood by Aristotle himself, he is thought of having one of the great minds of history, strategic brilliance and magnetic charisma. I am indebted to my father for living, but to my teacher for living well. (quote of Alexander)

Alexander's conquests were notably the first time that a form of 'globalization' was to have occurred in history, spreading the Greek language and ideals in culture, science, the arts, commerce and currency. The extent of his empire was vast, reaching as far as India and modern-day Afghanistan.

After the death of Alexander in 323 BC, owing to the fierce competition of his successors (diadochoi), his enormous empire was broken up into 7 independent dominions. This marked the end of the classical age and the beginning of the Hellenistic period.

There are 2 common types of Alexander the Great coins featured extensively in our coin jewelry collection.

    1) Coins which were issued during Alexander's LIFETIME (often depicting the god Hercules or Athena) Hercules's image on Alexander the Great's lifetime coins was a tribute to the semi-god. It is said that out of 'modesty' Alexander did not want to provoke the gods by depicting his own image and chose Hercules instead. This way Alexander could cleverly also be widely associated with the virility and strength of Hercules himself.

    2) Coins issued immediately after Alexander the Great's death by his successor King Lysimachus of Macedon. These coins DEPICTED ALEXANDER the Great himself in some of the most beautiful coin portraiture seen in universal coinage.

  • Attica jewelry

Attica is the region of Greece which took its threshold of power among the Greek city states and Delian League in the Golden age. Athens became the center of the civilized world and boasted this through the creation of the Parthenon (the most expensive and impressive monument that had ever been built).

The Athenian city classes were wealthy and enjoyed refined materials, gems and luxuries from free trade which flourished in their vast empire. Gold and silver were the preferred materials for lavish jewelry and ornaments. Sometimes this jewelry had great detail, and sometimes it had timeless simplicity and pure lines that accentuated the beauty of the figure.

  • Minoan & Mycenean jewelry

The Minoan and Mycenean civilizations are renown for their beautiful artworks, namely for their excessively detailed jewelry and for their beautiful vase and wall-painting (frescoes). These civilizations are inter-related artistically because they influenced one another as trading partners and they are believed to have had similar cultures. Both peace-loving (particularly the Minoans) and aspiring to the beauty and wisdom of nature itself. It is believed that the Minoan civilization may have been a matriarchal society governed by women.

Their most notable artistic depictions are the Minotaur and the sport of bull-jumping, dolphins in every form, the bees of Malia, sacred snakes and snake goddesses, double-headed axes, the beautiful lily frescoes of Knossos. An important artifact that continues to offer sensation through its mystique, is the famous disc of Phaistos.

Most of the information about these cultures is received through their art-forms as actually very few texts from these civilizations have been discovered. The Minoan civilization, although centered on today's island of Crete, is thought to have extended culturally through trade relations to the island of Thira (Santorini) - the location which according to the detailed descriptions of Homer, stands a great chance of being the very home of the lost and destroyed city of Atlantis.

  • Byzantine Jewelry

Byzantine jewelry is a corner-stone period in the art history of jewelry, yet little is known about it in the modern world and it is comparatively undiscovered my art historians. The Greek jewelry shop collection of Byzantine crosses and Byzantium jewelry in general is extremely rare and one of the only surviving collections of its kind. The survival of this incredible collection of Byzantine jewels is due to the heritage of the founders - the Vaphiadis family who originated from Byzantium (Asia-Minor) and fled to Greece in the 1920's for safety from the Turkish ethnic cleansing of Greeks. The art of Byzantium was abundantly handed down to us and even though this type of jewelry is very particular and has an untrained audience, it is usually appreciated by avid jewelry lovers for its unique un-compromising detail and disciplined character.

To make this large section more easily navigated we have separated it into two main sub-sections. Don't forget to use the filters in the left column as a n aid to view items that might be of interest.

  • Double Axe jewelry

The double axe (also known as a Labrys or Pelekys) was a symbol of the thunder-god Zeus and his weapon used to invoke storm. The oldest double axe artifact has been dated 100,000 BC and was found in Paleokastro (Northern Greece) in 1963. The double-axe was a widespread symbol in the Minoan civilization - the first known Greek civilization which peaked at the 2nd millenium BC. Very large Labrys found at the site of Knossos (Crete) were both decorative and sacrificial. Some which are taller than a human being in size were likely used to sacrifice bulls to summon the favor of Zeus.
